I awoke at 10:11 and immediately panicked that we had overslept—especially on our last day of the weekend! We got up and headed downstairs to try out our new coffee beans! I watched several James Hoffman videos on the AeroPress to make sure we perfected our brew. He has a four part series on the AeroPress, here’s video one:
We made three different brews, and the last one was probably the best. I tried to follow James’ “Ultimate” AeroPress technique. He recommends a light roast, and we had a dark roast, along with a non temperature specific kettle - both of which make this more of a guessing game than I’d ideally like.
After an hour with fiddling with the thing, I started to realize I must not like black coffee! I think I need some milk added to enjoy the experience more. But alas, I will still try to improve. James did mention in one of the videos that there are World AeroPress Competitions, and even between rounds, the same competitors are not able to produce the exact same brew - which is extremely unsettling to me. I prefer something much more predictable!
After enjoying our croissants (with our lackluster coffee), we decided to head out for a walk and to grab some groceries. We walked in a direction opposite the beach to see more of the city for nice half-hour stroll.
On the way back we stopped for groceries and then headed up to make lunch. I found lots of different marmalades in the grocery store, so was primed to make toast - I’m eating so European and loving it!
This afternoon was my time to feel lackluster, and I had a relaxing afternoon watching YouTube and reading various articles. I finally perked up and got some good Pericle work in before heading out on a run. It was a much greater success than I would have expected - It’s nice to have a running buddy with me, it makes the time much more tolerable. Plus, running is so easy for him that it’s just a nice way for him to get moving.
After our run we quickly changed into our swimming suits and headed to the beach. Floating around in the water after the run was the perfect way to cool off. The Mediterranean is warmer than the lake, but not by much! We stayed in the water until I started to get chilly, and then moved to the sand to read. We again got distracted by people watching and chatting. I started to get quite hungry and wanted to get more Pericle work done, so right as we were about to start reading, we decided it was a better use of time to head back.
When at the grocery store, we bought the two cheapest wines we could buy for a taste test. While making dinner we decided to do the taste test. One was €1 and the other was €0.82 for a liter of boxed wine. Our blind taste test proved successful! Would you believe they were both bad?! The €1 wine was surprisingly far worse, and both of us shuddered after trying it. The €0.82 one was much more tolerable. I may buy some juice to try to make a type of sangria, we'll see! We made avocado, chorizo, tomato, and egg toast (are you sensing a theme yet?) and then went our separate ways to get some work done.
Neither one of us were tired so we ended up having a late night in bed with me playing Mini Motorways and Sergio watching and helping out.20220829: Just Another Manic Monday
